North China’s only food event concludes another successful year

ANUFOOD China 2017 – the only food trade event in North China – wrapped up successfully on September 1 after three activity-packed days. Taking up a total of 35,000 square meters, the event hosted 703 exhibitors from 30 countries and regions and received 15,101 unique visitors from 21 countries & regions in food industry.

As the largest country contingent from Europe, the German pavilion showcased renowned local beer and dairy products drawing considerable footfall, while its Korean counterparts – the biggest international pavilion at the event – won over buyers with their local specialties and traditional processing skills.

Other sizable pavilions hailed from France, Poland, Italy, Russia, Turkey, Argentina, Singapore and Kazakhstan, with regional foodstuffs and beverages such as Argentina's famed beef products; Russia’s confectionery and snack foods as well as meat products from Kazakhstan.

“We came to Beijing because it’s the capital of China. We recognize that we are able to find many trade partners and distributors for our members here,” said Vasilchenko Andrey Pavlovich, Vice-President of the China Business Center from Russia.

Echoing his sentiments, Nicolas Jauzion of D’Aucy Long Life from France expressed, “We think that now is a good timing for us to meet the customers from North China.”

“After starting off in Shanghai, we decided to expand our operations to North China – here at ANUFOOD China,” said Philip Hayessen, Managing Director of TSI GmbH & Co. KG from Germany.

Also packing a punch, domestic pavilions from Hebei and Shandong respectively showcased unique regional flavors, together with the Zhejiang contingent, which made its foray at the event.

Besides the myriad of exhibits, this year’s enhanced conferences; business matching and culinary competition segments also brought about more opportunities for showcase and provided a multidimensional visitor experience.

Conferences inspire new opportunities for food industry

The powerful line-up of conferences included the China International Meat Conference and the Imported Food Conference organized by the China Chamber of Commerce of Foodstuffs and Native Produce (CFNA).

Besides gathering authoritative government agencies to examine industry policies and regulations, experts also analyzed market conditions and forecast trading trends, together with successful businesses to deep-dive into emerging market trends and distribution channels. Subsequently, foreign meat producers had the opportunity to network with meat product traders.

A sourcing platform for professional buyers

Several heavyweight buyer delegations and representatives participated actively at business matching sessions, included CFNA, the China Chain Store & Franchise Association and international hotel chains, such as the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and Marriott, and e-commerce platforms like Taobao and Beijing Tao of Taste Technology Co., Ltd.

Chinese Cuisine World Championship 2017

Founded in 2015, the Chinese Cuisine World Championship returned with a bang this year. Lasting two days, 19 participating teams from Japan, Mongolia, Malaysia, Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong engaged in a fierce 6-course cook-off based on an appetizer, a hot soup, seafood entree, meat entree, main course and dessert.

Centering their creations on elements of Chinese cuisine, contestants whipped up fusion dishes, which cater to consumers’ demands according to international competition rules and evaluation criteria. Results were determined by a panel of 30 judges certified by the World Association of Chefs Societies, or Worldchefs in short, hailing from all over Asia and the Pacific.

Eventually, the team from the Hong Kong Chefs Association took the top spot, while Yunnan Rongtong and IHG’s Holiday Inn Hotels team emerged as first and second runner-up respectively.

The 1st Japanese Culinary Invitational Competition & Summit

Collaborating for the first time with the China Hospitality Association (CHA), the Japanese Food & Beverage Industry Summit & The 1st Japanese Culinary Invitational Competition was held concurrently with ANUFOOD China. Norwegian Salmon which sponsored by Norwegian Seafood Council is one of the appointed for the competition.

The inaugural competition featured a judging panel led by the prolific Tomizawa Hiroyichi, imperial chef for the Japanese emperor, and 30 individual contestants and 5 teams. Japanese restaurants Edomae Sushi and Shota Muni Sushi and Grill, both from Beijing, together with Shanghai’s Akasakatei nabbed the gold awards.

Italian Pasta Summit China Edition 2017

The Italian Pasta Summit China Edition also returned in 2017 after its successful debut last year to feature over 30 contestants from China who vied for titles over the two-and-a-half day event. Two groups of judges from Italy and China – also certified by Worldchefs - oversaw the entire evaluation process.

The overall winner went to Shi Xueyang and the “Most Creative Pasta” title was won by Li Bai.

However, the highlight of the competition was perhaps the masterly display of culinary prowess by 30 Italian celebrity chefs, which was broadcast ‘live’ to the audience outside the battleground.

Metro Catering Theatre

The atmosphere was further enlivened by German retail and wholesale giant Metro, which presented F&B solutions on the first day of the event comprising four segments on school canteens focusing on food safety topics, government canteens focusing on nutrition, commercial canteens focusing on effective cost control, and airline catering/catering companies focusing on innovative menu design respectively.

Topics on the second day shifted to solutions for Chinese restaurants across the north, south, east and west regions based on each area’s unique culinary differences. Through education and interaction, Metro trainers also joined hands with customer chefs to demonstrate a multitude of other solutions and address hot-button issues in its 300-square meter showcase area.
